our student affairs colleagues nationwide. As the field changes, so
does our software.
August 16, 2010 | Maxient Client Featured in Chronicle Article on Classroom Misconduct The Chronicle shines a light on growing classroom incivility, and notes the proactive steps taken by Maxient client Montgomery College in the article "When Students Become Class Bullies, Professors Are Among the Victims". The
article discusses
Montgomery College's efforts to make their behavioral intervention team known to faculty and the greater campus community. Among the essential components of that team's
operation is incident reporting and management via Maxient. A faculty member quoted in the article states, "I don't think any of us see the behavioral-intervention team
as punitive." This echoes what Maxient is hearing from college and university faculty members nationwide: a recognition that judicial and behavioral processes can
co-exist independently, and that with appropriate reporting mechanisms in place, BITs can be a highly effective tool in helping faculty deal with improper classroom
behavior.

April 15, 2010 | Maxient Helps Schools with Drinking Assessment
Maxient is used by many schools across the country to improve their work processes and evaluate their impact on student conduct at their respective institutions. Several schools, however, are involved in a more formalized process of assessment nationwide under a grant from the Department of Justice's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP).
The three-year grant, entitled "Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws (EUDL) - University Initiative" is hosted at just seven institutions across the country. Of the seven, three are Maxient clients: Clemson University, Eastern Illinois University, and the University of South Carolina. The goal of the project is to demonstrate that through evidence-based enforcement of underage drinking laws, prevention planning and programming, and environmental strategies, that there is a reduction of drinking amongst university students.
There are several key areas of the grant for which schools must develop three-year work plans: Coalition, Compliance Checks, DUI enforcement, Social Availability of Alcohol, Policy Change, and Environmental Strategies. As a result, the money is dispersed among several groups working together on the project but Maxient has become an important piece in the evaluation of their efforts.
Erica N. Roa, Alcohol Standards Specialist in the Office of Student Standards at Eastern Illinois University explains, "A majority of our money goes to the Charleston Police Department and EIU Police for increased enforcement but all of our data comes from Maxient. Every quarter I have to report the following outcomes: number of unintentional injuries related to alcohol consumption among underage persons, number of first time alcohol-related incidents, and the number of alcohol-related traffic injuries/fatalities."
This is the first-time that OJJDP has looked at the alcohol issue at universities in this way. The information that is collected from the individual sites as well as outcomes will be presented in a report to Congress at the conclusion of the grant term.
